Darlene Elizabeth Schmaltz passed away peacefully in Lacombe, Alberta, on January 4, 2026, at the age of 77.
She was predeceased by her parents, Archie and Edith, and her cherished son, Quentin.
Darlene dedicated a lifelong career to public service with Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. Her career began at the Peace River Correctional Centre, and she eventually worked her way to head offices in both Edmonton and Calgary, where she held various positions and training roles. She also found great joy in cooking and entertaining family and friends, crocheting, reading, and had a lifelong love for dogs.
Darlene’s familial roots ran deep within Canada and Alberta’s history. Her grandfather, Joseph Butlin, was the 173rd member of the North-West Mounted Police and came to Calgary during the “March West” to help establish Fort Calgary in 1875.
She leaves to mourn her sister, Raelene, and brother-in-law, Henry; her daughter, Raelene, and son-in-law, Darrick; along with numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
